About the settings for Netscape on Macs.

There is a 'Preferences...' entry in the 'Options' menu. As usual, this pops up a dialogue with choices on various sub-parts of the preferences. You have to look for 'Helper Applications'. This lists a number of possible mime types, with related applications.

The user has to fill in for the mime type jpeg, choose a jpeg previewers throught the 'Browse' button. The mistake one can make, though, is that setting the application is not enough. On the lower left hand corner there is a radio-button set called 'Action', which should be set to 'Launch', i.e., that the application has to be launched by Netscape. The default is usually 'Previewed by Netscape', or something like that, and this is not what you want.

You may use the (public domain) JPEGView program, which is perfect. It is not as flexible as xv, it can manage jpeg only, but this is all right for you.

A word of caution: Netscape needs cca. 3-4 Mbytes to run properly, and JPEGView seems to use cca. 1Mb. If the machine has, say, 8Mb core only, this can be tight.
